Let me go?

‘Let me go’ is the third single from Avril Lavigne’s latest self titled album. This song was co-written and sung by Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger. A song which lets you in on the journey of a failed relationship, letting go of the memories which once was of love but now is the remains of only what was once.

“Love that once hung on the wall, Used to mean something but now it means nothing. The echoes are gone in the hall, But I still remember the pain of December. There is isn’t one thing left you could say, I’m sorry it’s too late.”

Avril’s emotions are numb on past memories. What brought purpose to her soul is now a reminder of pain. Those moments hold value no more, neither a photograph nor reality. What love once spoke of, lost words by the end of it. It’s heartbreaking for her to forget her pain in December, soon after her divorce in November. Every entity has a breaking point. Likewise, her relationship had reached a stage where her soul ceased to co-exist with her partner’s. She feels the need to end the aging agony of her dying relationship.

“I’m breaking free from the memories, Gotta let it go, just let it go, I’ve said goodbye, set it all on fire, Gotta let it go, just let it go.”

Avril is breaking free from her fairy tale turned failure. Setting fire to her memories, they rain down like ashes and blown away by the wind. Her goodbye proves testament to her letting go of the past, the relationship and her self-crushing sorrow.

“You came back to find I was gone, And that place is empty, like the hole that was left in me. Like we were nothing at all, It’s not what you meant to me, thought we were meant to be. There isn’t one thing left you could say, I’m sorry it’s too late.”

This verse is sung by Chad Kroeger. Letting go is easier said than done. Even after trying, she came back for him, only to find him gone as the smoke in a chimney disappearing by leaving no trace behind. The home they created is an empty place, digging through the soul of the heart. What brought them happiness has turned to the opposite. Chad speaks of love running out of hope rendering it no depth as darkness in the grim. He believed that they were meant to be though fate chose otherwise. It’s time they laid waste to the shallowness. It’s decided that it’s a little too late and they’d rather let go.

“I let it go and now I know, A brand new life is down the road. And when it’s right, you always know, So this time I won’t let go.”

All endings have new beginnings. The crossing of a finishing line is the inception of a new race. Starting over is the right choice than being hung over. When true love comes around, you will hold onto it. Giving up isn’t an option this time around. Fighting till the end and making it right is the way to go.

“There’s only one thing left here to say, Love’s never too late.”

When a relationship full of disappointment is at its end, a road is paved. The choice is to take the same path or build a new one. There is light at the end of the tunnel and Avril believes that her train of love is never too late.

“And two goodbyes led to this new life, Don’t let me go.”

Two goodbyes is the start of two new lives. As much as she has let go, she’d like to be held onto. The fire in her relationship has been extinguished but she believes that a flame will come around to grant her the warmth she deserves. She pleads her love to never let go.

“Won’t let you go, Don’t let me go.”

The last two lines project her feelings towards true love. In the face of all odds, she will hold on and wishes to be held onto. Avril turns the song from a negative perspective to a positive one. From letting go to refusing to do the same, she has grown in the span of four minutes and twenty seven seconds. Love can cause you to do many things and often has the potential to showcase two sides of the same surface.

‘Let You Go’ is more than what meets the ear. Avril Lavigne’s relationships despite causing a great deal of sorrow, has helped the Canadian in terms of writing simple yet breathtaking lyrics. This single isn’t filled with strong words. The simplicity and the tone paints the right picture, making this song one of Avril’s best till date. The beauty of this track in particular is the bringing together of two musicians that fell in love while co-writing and recording. Though the message of the song is letting go, two individuals were bound together through the words of a heartbreak. Irony is the appropriate word to describe the single itself and the circumstances created by it. Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger are happily married today.

If one were to study her previous albums, a certain thought as to how this single came up could intrigue you. One of her famous tracks titled ‘Keep Holding On’ suggests a completely different belief. The Avril Lavigne then chose to give it her all in every possible scenario. Time depicts truth and the Canadian has understood herself better with the years that have passed by. She has come to terms with her relationships and takes a firm stand. Arguably, one of the best musicians of our time, Avril Lavigne has sent us a message that this isn’t another chapter in her life but an entirely new script where she’s taking charge and writing her own fate. ‘Let You Go’ is the obituary to her past.
